XC COUNTRY SKIING, SKATE & CLASSIC

Ski on over 90 miles of meticulously groomed trails of the American Birkebeiner (Birkie) system and other local trails such as North End & Seeley systems.

Area trails are maintained from first decent snowfall through snow melt in the Spring, ~ late November – mid March.

HIKING & SNOWSHOEING

The area is home to over 100 miles of both easy & challenging scenic trails through woods and by rivers & lakes. Many are dog friendly. 60 miles of the North Country Trail, which is part of the National Scenic Trail System, is accessible from the Cable-Drummond area. The North Country Trail ranges from New York to North Dakota, connecting to the Appalachian Trail in the East & the Lewis & Clark Trail in the West. The NCT is 4,600 miles long. www.northcountrytrail.org There are many waterfalls to visit in nearby WI State Parks, such as Copper Falls State Park.

BIKING

Start the New Year on the Fat Bike on miles of groomed snow trails of the CAMBA system and gradually get slimmer, road riding, heading into summer.

Fat-Mountain-Road. All terrain is available for your enjoyment. Extensive CAMBA (Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association) trails with over 400 miles of off road biking. Reach out to the community & local shops & find a group ride for the biking discipline of your choice most any day of the week. For the road bikers, please enjoy scenic routes by lakes & forests with minimal traffic, smooth pavement & some hill challenges. www.cambatrails.org

Cable is perfect for year-round fun on two wheels. Roads & trails offer scenic riding no matter what size wheel you enjoy, skinny to fat. CAMBA (Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association) builds and maintains our local Single Track & Fat Biking Trails.

START LINE SERVICES can suggest routes & we have CAMBA Single Track & Gravel maps for sale with proceeds going to CAMBA. Prefer the open road? Imagine a road ride with minimal traffic while enjoying hills, lakes & forests.

WATER ACTIVITIES

Ice fishing is popular in the winter when the area lakes are frozen.

When the ice melts, area rivers & lakes beckon paddlers for kayaking & canoeing. For those who enjoy fishing, there is plenty of opportunity whether you are relaxing in a boat or fly fishing.

The Namekagon River – part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway – is a National Park less than a mile from Start Line Inn. The Namakagon River Visitor Center, part of the National Park Service, is located on Highway 63 in Trego, a 45-minute drive from START LINE INN. Click here for river map.

Stretches of the Namekagon River between Cable & Hayward are popular fly fishing waters. There are opportunities to fish for brook trout and brown trout. Below Hayward, the Namekagon River turns into a fantastic river for fly fishing for smallmouth bass, northern pike and muskies! Lakes abound in the Cable area with more than 10 large lakes to choose from & numerous smaller lakes. The 2 most well-known are Lake Owen & Lake Namekagon, each just 15-minute drive from START LINE INN.

There are many public beaches perfect for swimming & a day of family fun.

SPORTS CLINICS

CXC hosts several XC ski clinics in the area. They have Masters, Youth, Developmental & Adaptive programs. Roller Ski and on snow clinics. www.cxcskiing.org.

There are Women Specific XC clinics in December hosted by Riverbrook, Gear West and Ski & Tea.
In June, there is a Women’s Mountain Bike Weekend Clinic & a Youth Mountain Bike Clinic.
