“The Start Line Inn Cabin is truly a special, quaint place to stay any time of the year! We have been there in summer and winter and love the location of the cabin, near the trails where we play and love the small town feel of Cable!” Colleen
“Repeat stay, another perfect experience. Stylish, sharp, clean, convenient, and location/location/location!”
“The Start Line in is warm and wonderful. Right on the Birkie trail. I was able ski in the sunrise every day! Eco-friendly design and living. Will stay here as often as I can when traveling to Cable.”
Lori
Your place was fantastic. Perfect for anyone that loves outdoor activities. Trails are easily accessible and so close to start of Birkie trail. Being a mtn biker, this was a gem. Plus a bike shop right below us!
Jin
“Everything about this property is amazing. The cabin has all the amenities one should want, but maintains a rustic charm one would expect from Wisconsin’s north woods. The wax hut and XC ski and bike shop on site provide anything an outdoor enthusiast could want.”
John
“Clean, modern Cabin steps away from the ski and bike trails! Very convenient to be able to not have to drive and just ski from the cabin. The kitchen is great and the beds are comfortable. Friendly and helpful hosts help make sure you have everything you need for a great vacation in the Northwoods.” Kristin
“Absolutely fantastic place to stay. Elizabeth and Mike are great at giving information on the area and responsive to questions and always went the extra yard. Plus, you cannot beat the location in relation to ski, bike, snowshoe, and snowmobile areas.” Wyatt
“Beautiful cabin that’s right on the extensive Birkie trail system. You can ski right from the front door. Helpful & responsive hosts. Small ski shop downstairs that sells poles, hats, gloves, and some clothing. Mike offers ski equipment services there too.”
Lynn
“Elizabeth’s home it is perfectly situated for mountain biking or cross country skiing. Check-in was so smooth, and Elizabeth was incredibly friendly. And of course, most importantly, the place is beautiful – everything you need to call at home, and sparkling clean.”
David
“This place is pretty much perfection. And if you bike and/or ski, you have a fantastic bike/ski shop included right with your place to stay. You cannot beat this place – Elizabeth and Mike are the bomb!”

“My four night stay at Elizabeth & Mike’s was the most fun, relaxing, delicious, exhausting and rejuvenating I’ve had in a very long time. The cabin is lovely…comfortable, quaint, nicely decorated and detailed…I felt very much at home walking in. Elizabeth had many wonderful suggestions about local things to do —I mountain-biked (for the first time) there, on a really great “easy” (but challenging, at least for me) course I’d never have found without her, hiked a section of the most beautiful North Country Trail (that I didn’t even know existed until she told me about it—it’s 4000 miles long!!) and am already yearning to go back to enjoy the winter “silent sports”, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and even winter biking (who knew??). And speaking of bikes, Mike’s knowledge, expertise (and bike repair shop, on premises), and enthusiasm for riding added tons to the experience (me: “fat tire?? What’s that?” Mike: (most kindly and gently): “ahhh, you have much to learn, grasshopper.” (paraphrase) ). And oh yeah, there’s canoeing, kayaking and fishing, too. The local restaurants (Sawmill Inn, Tillie’s Pies, Rivers’ Restaurant), also recommended by Elizabeth, we’re also stellar…yum!! All in an EXTREMELY beautiful part of the world. Needless to say, I’ll be back, already having a hard time waiting to return.”
John
“Really clean, stylish cabin at the start of the Birkie. Great appliances, nice views, clean and comfortable. Plenty of space for the family to spread out as well. I’d say this has to be the best spot to stay in the area. The “boutique” bike shop below the cabin was well equipped, and I was able to pick up a tool bag for my son’s Top Fuel before our second day of biking.”
Rick
“A stellar space, perfect for anyone wanting to explore all of the trail near Cable!!”
Amber
“Wonderful Northwoods escape! Every morning is a new opportunity to explore trails, rivers, local cuisine. Hosts are friendly, thoughtful, and extremely knowledgeable about bikes and nordic skiing. Remember, there is no bad weather, only improper gear.”
Rhonda
Our family stayed here for a long weekend. Great hosts and great cabin with convenient access to the mountain bike trails. Having the bike shop on site was great as I needed a new shift cable on my daughter’s bike and Mike was able to take care of it for me. We will definitely be back.
Bob
“I am almost afraid to tell everyone how fabulous this place is because it will be so booked up, but really, this place is fantastic. If you mountain bike, road bike, cross country ski, snow shoe and/or hike, you will LOVE this place. It is perfectly done, casual, really nice accommodations with feeling like you have to worry about being super careful all the time. Totally done with sports people in mind with a wide entry way and more. Both owners Elizabeth and Mike are the nicest, best hostess and host you can imagine. Having a bike and ski shop right there is a huge bonus. It is truly the back woods perfect retreat.”
Laurie
“Place was exactly what we needed. Nice estate they have. And very well designed. Thanks again. Will stay if In the area again.”
Tyler
“This cabin was amazing for my family. Beautiful, peaceful lodging to cook big meals and sleep well. Great location to ride in/out. Elizabeth and Mike were incredibly kind and helpful. Also Cable is a nice little town with great food and coffee. Thanks for the fun and R&R!”
Chris
“This is a phenomenal place to stay!! We stayed at the cabin as part of a “girl’s weekend” and loved the space, the amenities, and the hospitality. Elizabeth was easy to communicate with and had some great recommendations for area attractions as well as helpful tips for making the most of our stay. The cabin itself is spacious, charming, and very comfortable! I would definitely recommend staying here if you have the chance.”
Emi
“The place is wonderful! Location, beautiful accommodations, everything you need for a weekend , or more, of relaxation, comfort or hitting the trails!”
Diane
“You are in for a treat if you stay here. The area is beautiful and the lodging is beyond a doubt the most comfortable stay I have ever experienced considering all of the AirBnBs and hotels I have stayed at. Elizabeth, her husband, and their dog are a wonderful bunch, and I can’t say enough about them.” Yourri
Love these guys! They are beyond hospitable. I helped an injured skier off the Birkie skate trail into the Start Line Inn, and Elizabeth let us wait for the rescue truck in the main house- she even offered her personal vehicle! Go check these guys out, they’re legit!
Deb
“Beautiful house in an equally beautiful setting. Many unexpected details throughout with great attention to detail. Extremely clean house that is beautiful in so ways – large windows with sunlit areas, delightful reading nooks, gorgeous kitchen that is a delight to cook in, and a beautiful deck and entryway. Gorgeous house and wonderful owners!” Kathleen
“Highly recommended! Elizabeth and Mike are wonderful people with an amazing property. If you are a mountain biker and/or a skier you can’t beat this place. A bike and a ski shop on premise and just a great place to hang in Birkie country. Mike provided us with awesome recommendations for the local trails and we had a blast. I will definitely be back.”
Chad
My family and I loved staying in the cabin. It is in the most perfect location for access to skiing. We stayed comfy and enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. Having the ski shop on site was helpful to buy some ski wax. Elizabeth and Mike are super helpful and generous with their property. Thank you!”
“Elizabeth and Mike were helpful and hospitable. They made our stay easy and enjoyable. The binding on Craig’s ski wasn’t working and Mike didn’t hesitate to quickly fix it and get us on the trail. Their dog Pupman was cute and friendly. The cabin was SO comfy cozy and the location the best!!! Thank you!”
Allison
“Elizabeth and Mike are great hosts and can answer any questions regarding what their community has to offer. For skiers or silent outdoor enthusiasts this is the place for you. The cabin is exceptional. You will not be disappointed.”

Start Line Inn: “We stayed here during the Fat Birkie. Absolutely the best location. Elizabeth and Mike have a great place. Please check it out. You will be so happy you did.”
Jill
“What a wonderful cabin in the woods! Birkie trail and endless fat biking, xc and hiking trails in the back yard! Elizabeth was wonderful and met us at the door when we pulled up. She gave us great suggestions and was always there if we needed her. The cabin is gorgeous and absolutely perfect for 2 or more. We had an amazing Christmas weekend and we cannot wait to go back.”
Dana
“Elizabeth and Mike were great hosts and the cabin was very cozy and comfortable. Beautiful ski trails were right out the door. We had a perfect winter getaway.”
Jonathan
“We enjoyed staying at the Start Line Inn. It was comfortable and clean and met all our needs. We especially liked the open floor plan and all the amenities, especially the cooking facilities. We found the lighting excellent for reading books on the couches. We booked the Start Line Inn to go xc skiing on the American Birkebeiner and North End Trails. Access to the American Birkebeiner is within yards of the Inn, and we put on our skis right outside the cabin. The heated, vented wax hut outside the Inn is awesome! We also took advantage of using their snow shoes a few times. The ski shop under the Inn also had a few waxing items we needed to replenish our supplies. Mike is very knowledgeable about xc skiing and bicycling. Elizabeth and Mike were wonderful hosts and the Start Line Inn exceeded our expectations.”
Ken & Anne
“The hosts are truly unmatchable! Their hospitality and knowledge of the area makes for a perfect cabin/outdoor recreation weekend. I definitely recommend the Start Line Inn for guests of Cabin, WI.”
“Thank you for handling our spontaneous travel plans, again. It was a pleasure staying at the Start Line Inn, I can’t really imagine a trip to Cable, WI and not staying there now.
Chrissy
“Elizabeth was an excellent host. She was quick on communication and flexible. She made check in and out a breeze. She checked in with us and gave us space. We rented both the Main Cabin and Loft in the Woods which were both extremely clean with open space. The kitchen well was fully equipped for cooking in the Main Cabin. Privacy for the multiple guest was minimal but that was as expected and even better for close knit groups. We would definitely come back!
Cuong
“We had a wonderful extended mountain bike weekend at the Start Line Inn. The Holland’s have extensive knowledge of the trails and were able to give us suggestions for each ride we planned. The location can’t be beat either. The property and cabin are beautiful, and we plan on coming back!”
Peter
“The Start Line is perfectly located for outdoor enthusiasts with immediate access to the American Birkebeiner cross country ski trail system and the CAMBA mountain bike trail system. We hiked on the trails every day. Mike and Elizabeth are great resources for any information you need about the trails. The lodging has an amazing kitchen with new full-sized appliances and everything was immaculately clean. We really enjoyed our stay.”
Kristin
“Great spot in a cute little town. It’s right on the edge of a forest trail and a few minutes from lakes and rivers for swimming. This place is very welcoming for a family (4 in ours). Our kids loved the loft bed. Sleeping arrangements for all of us were super comfy. Wonderful kitchen to cook meals. But don’t miss the wonderful pizza at Ideal Market. And the pies at Tilly’s were excellent. Mike and Elizabeth were great hosts – friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again if we come this way again.”
Kristian, cabin guest
“Elizabeth is a wonderful, friendly host and the location of her property is perfect for nordic skiers. The cabin was roomy and comfortable, and cooking was easy in the open kitchen. We appreciated the thoughtful additions of cloth napkins and reusable shopping bags in order to reduce waste. We loved the wax room on site that was available at all times. My family and I look forward to staying here again!”
Lori
Mike and Elizabeth’s place was absolutely perfect for our annual women’s cross country ski weekend. The cabin is beautiful and just steps from the Birkie trail. So many thoughtful and fun details in the space! We enjoyed cooking in the lovely kitchen and hanging out in the warm and relaxing cabin between time on the ski trails. Mike and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts — quick to respond to our questions and helpful in figuring out where to ski. We will be back!
Jenny & friends
“This is a true state of the art, cozy, quaint, cabin in the woods! We love the woodwork and detailed craftsmanship! So convenient to the snow trails out your door to enjoy the silent activities that feed your soul! The personable hosts were most accommodating and right there for any need, even a shop for ski/bike needs or something you may have forgotten! We were welcomed with yummy homemade granola bars upon our arrival and had a memorable time surrounding the Birkie 2018! We felt so lucky to be at such a perfect location!”
Colleen & Greg
“We loved our stay at the Start Line. I’ve been skiing (racing) and biking (racing) in the area for 30 years, but never heard of the Start Line Inn. They ‘ve built a great little gem and the Birkie Trail is about 50 ft from the front door. The start line is about 500 meters down the track. This also offers access to the North End and Telemark trails. If you’re a biker, this area has some of the best mt. bike and fat bike trails in the state (and probably the nation). If you forgot something at home, they have a ski shop and bike shop on the property…yeah, really. The cabin was great with old charm and modern amenities. (We loved the woodworking details.) The beds were super comfortable and it looked like the cabin has just been refurbished after starting life as an old funky cabin. All-in-all, a great stay and the owners are the types you want to see succeed.”
Jay
“Perfect location for skiers, bikers and hikers with the Birkie and Camba trails right out the door. We had 4 couples (8 people) so we reserved the Coach House in addition to the Startline Inn. This gave us plenty of room to spread out and dry all of our gear after full days of skiing and fat biking plus it allowed 4 of us to sleep in each location. The bike / ski shop on the property also came in very handy because we had a few equipment issues that were remedied in the shop. We had a fantastic time staying at this property and definitely plan to come back.”
Dan
“The location of the Start Line Inn cabin is very convenient to the biking and skiing trails. If one wanted to, they could literally park at the cabin and ride to pretty much everywhere, even the local market for groceries. The cabin itself has been remodeled in a tastefully modern fashion. The kitchen is great, with room to entertain many people. As listed, it is a studio but our kids loved having the curtains around the beds and after long days playing outside sleeping was no issue! Elizabeth and Mike are great hosts. They were very responsive to messages and readily available to provide local trail tips and suggestions for things to do and places to eat. Mike even let us use tools for wrenching on bikes. Bikers could leave all their tools at home, this place has you covered! We really liked having Elizabeth and Mike on the same property as the cabin, they were not intrusive but easy to get a hold of. They were very friendly to us and our children and were eager to hear feedback on how they could make the experience even better. We have no doubt they will continue to be great hosts for many guests to come. We plan to visit again for sure!”
